Disclaimer: My opinions are my own

My employer has sent out new rules, one of which is that employees are to include a disclaimer when posting to forums or blogs that the opinions posted are "not the opinions of my employer".

This was covered in a memo on use of the company equipment, so am I to assume that I can now post to this blog while I'm at work, just so long as I post the disclaimer? If so, cool. But somehow, I doubt it.

Anyway, I doubt that any of you know (or care) who my employer is, but just in case someone from the corporate office is a) reading this blog and b) actually knows who it belongs to, let me post my disclaimer:

THE OPINIONS POSTED HERE ARE MINE AND MINE ALONE! THEY ARE NOT THE OPINIONS OF MY EMPLOYER, AND MY EMPLOYER IS HEREBY NOTIFIED THAT IT MAY NOT MAKE ANY CLAIMS TO AGREE WITH ME ON ANY POINT WHATSOEVER REGARDING WHAT I HAVE POSTED IN MY BLOG!

Now, let them put that in their pipes and smoke it.

Sounds like your employer threw in that little clause with the memo about the use of company equipment so that they would be justified in doing a little (lot?) of snooping. But it's silly...just WHAT will they do if they catch you leaving non-disclaimered posts anywhere?

My employer has Internet filters which prevent us from blogging and instant messaging while on the clock. But they would be aghast at what my personal blog contains. I could probably be fired. But I consider it a vital tool for my mental health. I just have to "vent" sometimes. And I don't have a wide circle of friends to unload on.

The first amendment pretty much covers our backs, here, doesn't it?

I think they're trying to set us up...make it sound like we can post from work so long as we post disclaimers, but then firing anyone that uses the company equipment to post because it would be a mis-use of the company equipment.

At least here in California there is a law that says an employer may not terminate an employee because of the employees political views. I don't know about other states...and since the current administration seems to be doing a good job tossing out the entire Constitution, somehow I don't think the first amendment will do us much good. After all, us bloggers who don't post glowing "Bush is Great" posts are un-American, troop-hating terrorists that have to be stopped in the interest of national security, doncha know? (For the humor-impaired federal agents that are reading this, that was sarcasm)
